Discovering Lake Federa

Starting from the flowery meadows of Peziè de Parù, with an easy two hour-walk you’ll discover a little corner of heaven: lake Federa is without doubt one of the most beautiful places in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

This stunning natural water expanse  lies between the massifs Croda da Lago, Cristallo, Antelao, Sorapiss and Becco di Mezzodì. The lake was named after Fedéra from “Féda” (sheep), referring to the ancient pasture land that you come across after around half an hour's descent to Cortina.

The lake is populated by molluscs and alpine newts and has an always constant water level, thanks to underground springs. There is a mountain hut right by the lake, the Croda da Lago refuge, a cosy retreat where you can enjoy the dishes of the Ampezzo and Ladin tradition. The dumpling tris served on cabbage is excellent, the strudel and the delicious home-made cakes, such as the ricotta cake, are a treat. And after the meal, you can choose between a rich selection of digestives: 56 flavoured grappas!

A highlight of the refuge is the Finnish barrel sauna: placed next to the lake and ecologically heated with conifer wood, it activates your body's natural relaxation response.
