Starting from the flowery meadows of Peziè de Parù, with an easy two hour-walk you’ll discover a little corner of heaven: lake Federa is without doubt one of the most beautiful places in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
This stunning natural water expanse lies between the massifs Croda da Lago, Cristallo, Antelao, Sorapiss and Becco di Mezzodì. The lake was named after Fedéra from “Féda” (sheep), referring to the ancient pasture land that you come across after around half an hour's descent to Cortina.
The lake is populated by molluscs and alpine newts and has an always constant water level, thanks to underground springs. There is a mountain hut right by the lake, the Croda da Lago refuge, a cosy retreat where you can enjoy the dishes of the Ampezzo and Ladin tradition. The dumpling tris served on cabbage is excellent, the strudel and the delicious home-made cakes, such as the ricotta cake, are a treat. And after the meal, you can choose between a rich selection of digestives: 56 flavoured grappas!
A highlight of the refuge is the Finnish barrel sauna: placed next to the lake and ecologically heated with conifer wood, it activates your body's natural relaxation response.
The departure and arrival point is the mountain hut Malga Peziè de Parù, where you can rest at the end of the hike and then have dinner. This refuge is located amid an alpine pasture, boasts a large terrace and a beautiful, manicured lawn with lounge chairs for sunbathing. The kitchen offers traditional dishes such as Casunziei, dumplings and knuckles of pork. The ginger, cumin, blueberry and wild mountain herb grappas of this refuge are very popular.

Start at the Malga Peziè de Parù mountain refuge, where you can park on the left side of the road in one of the designated areas. Here you take the bridle path (CAI 434). Once you crossed the Rio Costeana stream, it leads up into the forest and to the Cason de Formin (1885 m); the bridle path runs first to the south, then to the left, zigzagging up the steep forest slope. After a hike of about one and a half hours you reach a wall with a stunning view over the entire Ampezzo valley and the mountains all around: Tofane, Pomagagnon, Cristallo, Faloria, Sorapis, Antelao. From here the path descends gently to Lake Federa, which you will reach in about half an hour.
Return the way you came up. The descent is steep, therefore be careful when the path is wet to reduce the risk of slipping.
