Open air museum at the Sasso di Stria

During the Great War, the Austrians turned the Sasso di Stria into one of the most strategic emplacements of the Dolomite front. Situated at the side of the Valparola Pass road, between Monte Lagazuoi and the Col di Lana, it played a defensive role against the attacks by the Italians, who were aiming to reach the Badia Valley and from there the Pusteria Valley and the Brenner Pass.

The  strategic position, the wide view over the Italian front and the ease of access from the Austro-Hungarian side enabled the construction of emplacements, trenches and tunnels right up to the peaks of the Sasso di Stria, making it one of the key protagonists of the combat at high altitude.

The emplacements and walkways have now been made accessible thanks to the work of the Treviso Civil Protection Division of the Alpine Regiment (Ana).

You can reach the peak by walking along the trenches or through the Goiginger tunnel or on the Ferrata Mario Fusetti.

These are easy and exciting walks, and are suitable for children.
