Fedare Refuge

Opening dates: open all year round. In the off season fridays are rest days.

Always check the opening and closing dates.

The mountain hut Rifugio Fedare is open all year round and is thus ideal for people going up to the Giau pass seeking mountain experiences through all the seasons of the year.

The immense north wall of the Civetta dominates the view from its terrace suspended over the valley of the Codalonga River.

Next to the refuge starts the Giau Fedare chairlift giving access to the 5 Torri, Mt.  Lagazuoi, the Badia Valley and the complete ski carousel Dolomiti Superski. Furthermore, the Rifugio is situated on the skiing circuit Super8 Ski Tour. This Ski Tour is extremely panoramic. It winds around the mountains in an 8-shape along, easy slopes and has several entrances: the chairlifts of Bai de Dones and Giau pass, the Falzarego pass or Armentarola.

Together with his mother Anna, Ivan, the owner of the refuge, focuses with great passion on cooking.

As any good mountain hut host, he provides useful advice on mountain bike routes and excursions, on the nearby open-air museums of World War 1 and on the places where Mondeval man Valmo lived over 7000 years ago.
In winter the lunar landscape and the snow-covered mountainsides are ideal for excursions with snowshoes, the “ciaspes”, as the locals call them.

The Giau pass is also the venue for important, thrilling snow kite events where the skiers use colourful kites to glide on the snow.

If you want to admire the fiery sunset and the starry sky at a high altitude in this piece of heaven, you can stay in one of the four rooms with private bathrooms, decorated in a warm and cosy mountain style.
Ivan and his mother Anna take it in turns to cook traditional mountain dishes of the Dolomites, and the service is excellent.

The wine cellar offers a wide selection for connoisseurs, from the wines of the South Tyrol and indeed from all over Italy to those from Chile.

On request, you can have dinner based on the characteristic “canederli” from starter to dessert, or with shin of pork or grilled meat and vegetables while admiring Mount Civetta at sunset.

On autumn Sundays, when the golden larches do colour the valley, Mother Anna prepares the "Tirkle"* following an ancient Badia Valley recipe. The Fedare refuge also provides an excellent snack bar service.

Recipe for the “tirkle” by Anna Troi*:
250 g. wheat flour
250 g. rye flour
2 eggs
salt
little oil
water or lukewarm milk q.s.

Knead dough with these ingredients in a bowl and let it rest for 30 minutes. Roll out the dough very thinly and cut out circles. Fill them with ricotta-cheese and spinach or with sauerkraut, cover them with another circle of dough and fry in plenty of oil.

The Delicious Cortina team, which also includes the refuge Fedare, organizes all kinds of events throughout the year:  from high altitude concerts, parties on the panoramic terraces, exhibitions and meetings in the cultural centres of the area, historical re-enactments in the museums of WWI, sports competitions, themed dinners and photo competitions to solidarity events. The complete list of all these experiences is published in the events calendar.
